James A. Smith, also known as “Jimmy or Smitty” departed this life on Thursday, June 21, 2018.
James was born to Elnora L. Owens and Amil Settles Sr. on July 25, 1943 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was adopted by Anthony B. Smith and Corinne V. (Watkins) Smith and later raised by Hazel (Beasley) Smith.
James attended Indianapolis Public Schools and graduated from Shortridge High School in 1961.
James enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1961 where he continued to serve his country in the Vietnam War. In 1971 James enlisted in the United States Air Force where he later retired in 1983.
After retiring from the military, James was employed by the USPS in East St. Louis where he was a mail carrier until 1993.
In 1966 James married Bernadine (Parham) and from that marriage they had two daughters, Tonie Smith and Trish (Smith) Milledge.
In 1977 James married Johnnie R. (Cotton) Smith, and together they raised Stan, Claudia and Stacey Hatcher. Johnnie preceded James in death in 2008.
In 2015 James married Kim (Artis) Smith and accepted her children Kameron, Ky’erra, Lynda and Lauren as his own children.
James enjoyed traveling, fishing, listening to music and being around family and friends. James always said that has lived a life and traveled to places that most people read about.
James was preceded in death by his mothers, Elnora, Corinne, and Hazel and fathers, Amil Sr. and Anthony.
James is survived by his wife, his children, brother, grandchildren, great grandchildren, mother in law, father in law, and a host of family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at Indiana Funeral Care/Harry W. Moore Chapel. No visitation prior to service.
